The Best Wireless Audio Recorder / Lavalier

I never thought I would say this, but the best wireless lavalier or wireless audio recorder for video production in 2024 is, without a doubt in my mind, the Rode Wireless Pro. I say this only because Rode has been a bit of a back marker in snobby professional audio circles, but in the more practical creator applications Rode is killing it and providing exceptional value.

Don’t get me wrong, I still don’t like the interface with the Rode app on your computer to process and move audio files, but overall you just can’t beat the quality, value, and professional features in the Rode Wireless Pro. There is no wireless recording setup that can beat this for the money.

Here are the reasons I think this is the best system for the majority of content creators in the professional space:

  • 32 bit float audio recording — this should be standard on every audio recorder at this point, and allows for pretty much bulletproof recording when it comes to audio levels. No need to ride the levels while recording

  • Transmit and monitor audio while recording a 32 bit float backup recording — While the 32 bit float recording is something I would always keep, you may be able to get great audio by transmitting to camera allowing you to skip the extra step. Transmitting audio to camera allows you to hear what’s actually happening through the mic and stop any problems in the track, but it is also essential for any live applications. The ability to transmit audio to camera is key in many situations.

  • Timecode Sync — generate timecode through the Rode Receiver and jam sync with compatible cameras and devices by BNC. Alternately use the audio timecode feature to sync with devices like the Tentacle Sync system.

  • Built in microphone — this isn’t a huge one for me, and I hate the look of the transmitter clipped to someone’s shirt, but it can prove useful in many situations. The sound quality through this built in mic is also pretty decent.

  • 3.5mm locking connector for lavaliers — if you choose to use a more traditional wired lavalier having a locking connector is a standard fail safe in the event the mic gets tugged and the cable disconnected. This has happened to me, so the locking connector is just standard professional, but it’s surprising that no other system in this category has this feature.

  • Included lavalier mics — the Wireless Pro system includes 2x Rode Lavalier II mics. These are one of the best sounding lavs for the money, and the fact they are included is a nice touch. I don’t like the heavy Rode branding on the mic clips, but this can be solved quickly with some nail polish or a Sharpie :)

  • Great mic accessories — you can buy additional accessories such as the magnetic mic clip, or the ENG style reporter stick that turns the Rode Wireless Pro into a handheld reporter mic. The usual pop protectors and furries are also available.

  • 7 hour battery life — that’s long enough for most production applications, and can be even extended by charging in between takes or interviews using the included battery case.

  • USB-C connectivity — connect the Wireless Pro with your smart phone or computer by USB-C or Lightning cable.

Simply put, this is the most versatile wireless lavalier and recording system on the market. It does more or less everything that I could possibly want including the ability to sync with other devices by timecode. The 32 bit float recording provides a fail safe in the event that wireless transmission is interrupted, or that the levels peak in camera. All of these features in a relatively tiny setup makes for incredible creative opportunities.
